Sometimes I get a crazy idea, and being the artist I am…. I have to see it through and make my dreams a reality! This is one of those projects.
For anyone who is not familiar with the myth of the Phoenix, here’s what Wikipedia says about it, “The phoenix is an immortal bird associated with Greek mythology (with analogs in many cultures) that cyclically regenerates or is otherwise born again. Associated with the sun, a phoenix obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor.“. I love the symbology of being born out of fire to start anew! It relates to my many careers over the years and most recently my latest rebirth as a metal artist, so the flames are more than symbolic. I have also added chains to the legs of the Phoenix, from which it is breaking free. This symbolizes how we need to break free of internal and external forces to truly move forward and begin new phases of our lives. I hope that everyone who sees it gains some inspiration and looks forward to their next new step in life!
The sculpture is about 10 feet (3 meters) tall. I haven’t weighed the complete piece, bu the fire ring base is about 250lbs, the body about 200 and the wings I haven’t weighed, but I’ll guess about 25 pounds each (they are removable for easier transport) – so I figure about 500lbs (230kg) total. The base is on rollers, and it actually moves quite well considering the weight. It is made entirely from scrap metal parts, from the old truck tire rim that makes up the base to the hundreds of saws I used for feathers. Various tools, parts and other pieces for the body and head, while the legs are made from scrap rebar. The small feathers around the neck and upper body are rings from the inside of electric motors (I thought I had enough, but needed to hunt down and extra 50 or so to finish!!).
Here is a short video showing the sculpture, with some photos below. Please leave a comment and let me know what you think. – Cin
