Pencil Carving by Cindy Chinn

Cindy Chinn’s pencil carvings use graphite at a scale where familiar objects become almost architectural. Working with carpenter’s pencils, loose graphite, and mechanical pencil lead, she builds intricate trains, landscapes, figures, and narrative scenes that test both the limits of the material and the viewer’s perception of scale. Some elements are carved directly into the pencil while others are separately constructed and assembled, allowing each work to develop beyond the physical boundaries of the pencil itself.

Working at this scale requires a combination of carving, construction, and assembly. Some elements are cut directly into the graphite, while others are formed separately and incorporated into the finished work. The process pushes a fragile, everyday material well beyond what it was designed to do.

Between the Lines
In some works, the pencil carving becomes part of a larger object. Cindy alters vintage books to create fitted spaces for the carvings, using the book itself as frame, storage, and part of the narrative. Closed, the work appears to be an ordinary book. Opened, it reveals the miniature sculpture concealed inside.
